TOTAL SHOULDER ARTHROPLASTY

A Total Shoulder Arthroplasty aims to restore the functionality of the joint lost following traumas or invalidating pathologies.

Implantation of an artificial joint aims to reduce pain, regain lost mobility and improve the patient’s quality of life.

There are two different configurations of shoulder prosthesis, anatomical and reverse, both generally composed of 3 components made of highly biocompatible materials.

Anatomic
1. Humeral component (metal)
2. Humeral head (metal or polyethylene)
3. Glenoid component (metal or polyethylene) and eventual joint liner (metal or polyethylene)

Reverse
1. Humeral component (metal)
2. Humeral liner (metal or polyethylene)
3. Glenosphere (metal or polyethylene)

The inverse configuration is generally indicated in case of rotator cuff diseases.
FIxation of the prosthesis to the bone can be cementless (biological fixation) or cemented.
